Bowling ball pyramid
Egypt’s great pyramids have stood for thousands of years in silent reverence to a lost culture and society and also as architectural testimony to the greatness of humankind. Their magnitude and beauty bring a feeling of awe, even more than 3,000 years after their construction. On entry to the Marquis property, the first object one sees through the trees is an 8-foot-high pyramid made of at least 1,800 multicolored bowling balls. The pyramid shape has been associated historically with mystical powers of healing and rejuvenation. True to his own sense of wit, Marquis has placed under his little pyramid the ashes of their much loved dog companion. Pyramids have also been described as symbols of regularity and precision in the universe, representing the yang of order in contrast to the yin of chaos and randomness. However, in the case of Marquis’s pyramid, the sculpture puts the viewer on notice that the unusual is to come.
In many ways, the bowling-ball pyramid is a microcosm of the artist who created it, his sprit and his approach to art and life. Though Marquis is known the world round for his glasswork, this sculpture may be his simplest and yet most grand artistic representation. It is the tip of the iceberg, or a colorful window into his particular approach to art, humor, and passion for collecting. He finds interesting objects —usually discarded or no longer deemed valuable by their owners—that appeal to him because of some intriguing color, shape, or characteristic often apparent initially to only him alone. His artistic genius comes to life as he then assembles or clusters them in a repetitive pattern that makes them much more interesting than in their previous state. One sees throughout the Marquis home this theme of creative repetition, of objects found or of his making, displayed in rows and groupings. It is his artistic signature, found not just in his glasswork but in almost everything he touches.
